Dive pioneer urges more protection for Cromer chalk reef
Rob Spray, who helped reveal the full extent of the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds, says its Marine Conservation Zone designation has not delivered enough practical protection a decade after it was established. The 20-mile Norfolk reef supports diverse marine life, including species newly appearing as North Sea temperatures rise, but faces pressure from fishing, cable access and climate change. Conservation authorities say the site is being monitored and that management must protect habitats without disproportionately harming the fishing industry and coastal communities.
