Nationwide Building Society clarified its branch security policies after a security notice appeared at its Redhill branch, stating it routinely reviews measures such as CCTV, alarms, time-delay locks and security fog to ensure safety. The organisation said it may enhance measures at specific locations when necessary. Nationwide operates 605 branches, plus 91 Virgin Money locations acquired in 2023, and has committed to keeping all branches open until at least 2030 unless circumstances beyond its control require changes.

New DWP powers allowing direct bank account deductions and driving disqualification for unpaid benefit debts will be used from October 2026. Letters have been sent to former claimants who owe money, urging them to arrange repayment. Debt specialists warn safeguards are needed to prevent vulnerable people being misidentified as refusing to pay and stress the importance of human review, stronger vulnerability checks and better access to free debt advice. They emphasize distinguishing deliberate avoidance from people overwhelmed by health, caring or bereavement challenges.
