State pensioners issued update over 'tax system changes' as new rules come in
Government update as NHS users face extra £26 bill over prescriptions
Health minister James Frith said the Government keeps the rules for medical exemption certificates under regular review. Eligible people with certain conditions or receiving qualifying benefits can obtain free prescriptions in England, while the Government has frozen prescription charges for 2026/27. The current charge is £9.90 per item, 55p higher than five years ago, meaning someone receiving four prescriptions monthly pays about £26.40 more per year. Prescriptions remain free for everyone in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
