Sheffield-born midfielder Tom Sorsby says England are enjoying excellent team spirit after winning all three of their opening Hockey World Cup matches. England defeated Pakistan 4-1, India 4-2 and Wales 8-2, with Sorsby scoring against Wales and being named player of the match. England carry their win over India into the next group stage, where they face Argentina and co-hosts the Netherlands before the semi-finals and final.

Jack Whaley, a 22-year-old golfer from Conisbrough in Doncaster who plays for Rotherham Golf Club, became only the third Englishman to win the US Amateur Championship after defeating California’s Jay Leng Jr 4&3 in the final at Merion. Supported by his father Andy as caddie, Whaley chose his Yorkshire Union waterproof jacket as the traditional memento for the USGA archives. His rise began with coaching at the Pete Cowen Academy, continued through Rotherham and Yorkshire’s development pathway, and included collegiate success at Dalton State and Florida State. The victory secures exemptions to next year’s Masters, Open and US Open, as well as automatic selection for the Walker Cup.

Yorkshireman Jack Whaley won the US Amateur Championship at Merion, defeating American Jay Leng Jr 4&3 over 36 holes. The 22-year-old Rotherham Golf Club player and Florida State University student became only the third Englishman to win the prestigious title, following Matt Fitzpatrick and Harold Hilton. With his father Andy caddying, Whaley rallied from two down after the opening 18 holes and secured victory with a birdie putt. The triumph earns him exemptions to next year’s Masters, US Open and Open Championship.

Scott Lincoln finished fourth in the men’s shot put at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, missing bronze by 16 centimetres after briefly moving into medal position with a throw of 20.81 metres. The 33-year-old Northallerton athlete, who has now placed fourth at four major championships, said the result was frustrating despite giving everything and competing in front of home fans.
