New strategy to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour on North East public transport
The Safer Transport Northumbria Partnership has launched a strategy bringing police, transport operators, local authorities and regional partners together to tackle crime, anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls, accessibility concerns and fear of crime across North East public transport. Northumbria Police recorded 1,020 incidents between April 2025 and March 2026, with anti-social behaviour the largest category, although reported ASB has fallen by almost 10% since the partnership began in 2021. Measures include improved information sharing, visible and trained staff, stronger reporting systems, targeted policing, security teams, CCTV and passenger alert services. Partners say the strategy is intended to improve public confidence and ensure transport remains safe, welcoming and accessible.
