Major supermarkets pull disposable barbecues from shelves amid wildfire risk
Major retailers including Asda, Co-op, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Wilko and The Range are temporarily removing disposable barbecues from sale amid hot, dry weather and heightened wildfire risk. Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have not sold them since 2022, while Morrisons appeared to continue selling them online. The measures follow voluntary guidance from the National Fire Chiefs Council, which has urged people not to use disposable grills in open countryside, parks or moorland. Labour MP Jon Pearce welcomed the retailers’ actions but called for mandatory guidance, a possible ban on disposable barbecues in public spaces and broader government planning to address climate-driven wildfire risks.
