Ipswich YM Rugby Club has plans approved despite objections
East Suffolk Council approved plans for new floodlights at Ipswich YM Rugby Club in Rushmere St Andrew. The proposal includes four 15-metre lighting columns around the main pitch and six 12-metre columns around a second pitch. Residents submitted objections over light pollution and biodiversity, but the council planning officer concluded that the development would be unlikely to cause any meaningful additional impact.

Plans for Newton Hall near Ipswich buildings refused
East Suffolk Council refused plans for two buildings at Newton Hall near Ipswich: one for hay storage and another for machinery workshop and storage. The applicant sought approval under agricultural permitted-development rules, but the council concluded that the site formed part of Newton Hall’s established riding-school and livery operation rather than a separate qualifying agricultural unit. Its decision was based on planning records, previous approvals, photographs, sales materials, websites and social-media evidence.

Residents object to 20-person HMO plans in Ipswich
Residents have objected to plans by Discovery Bay Properties Ltd to convert 108 London Road in Ipswich, formerly a homeless shelter, into a 10-bedroom HMO for 20 people. Their concerns include the street’s existing concentration of HMOs, limited parking, speeding traffic, litter and alleged anti-social behaviour. The proposal would retain two parking spaces and add secure storage for 20 bicycles, with no changes to highway access. The application follows other HMO proposals on London Road, including a previously refused expansion at number 86.

Ipswich submits bid to become UK City of Culture 2029
Ipswich is submitting its proposal to become the UK City of Culture in 2029 after nearly a year of consultation, planning and collaboration among political, cultural, business and community leaders. The bid will compete for a place on a four-city shortlist, with the winning town receiving £10 million and potentially hundreds of millions of pounds in wider investment. Supporters say the designation could accelerate regeneration, attract visitors and businesses, strengthen community pride, create opportunities for young people and establish a long-term cultural and heritage strategy for Ipswich.

Milestone as Ipswich Waterfront silo to be revived
Regeneration plans for Ipswich’s Western Gateway have advanced with the appointment of a development adviser. The project covers St Peter’s Dock car park, the Paul’s Silo structure and the former Burton Son and Sanders building, with potential for new housing, retail and commercial space. Ipswich Central chief executive Lee Walker called the appointment an important milestone, while property developer John Howard said it should boost confidence among local businesses and could attract a European company headquarters, despite concerns about the exclusion of his own restoration project.

Concern over Ipswich car park war as Q-Park take over sites
Q-Park has taken over Ipswich's Tacket Street and Tower Ramparts car parks after National Car Parks entered administration. Councillor David Plowman is concerned that competition between operators could create a car park price war and drive up costs. He hopes Tower Ramparts will retain its reasonable prices and maintenance standards, while calling for better public transport and cycle routes and for underused land such as Tacket Street to be considered for social housing.

Ipswich car parks to be taken over by Q-Park from August
Two Ipswich town-centre car parks at Tacket Street and Tower Ramparts are due to transfer from National Car Parks, which entered administration, to Q-Park from August 1, 2026. Q-Park will become the first new operator of Ipswich car parks following NCP’s collapse. NCP previously managed six local sites; Portman Road was closed as financially unviable but later reopened by Ipswich Borough Council, while the remaining sites continued operating during the administration.
