Solar Eclipse Eye Damage and What to Do If You Looked Without Eye Protection
A partial solar eclipse visible across the UK exposed the risk of eye damage for people who viewed the Sun without certified protection. Optometrists explain that intense light can damage the macula and cause solar retinopathy, with symptoms such as blurred or distorted vision, dark spots, colour-vision changes, light sensitivity and reduced vision often appearing hours or days later without pain. Anyone experiencing symptoms or feeling that their vision is abnormal should seek prompt advice from an optometrist. There is no specific treatment, although many cases heal naturally; prolonged exposure can result in permanent vision loss.
