What It Meant to Attend the World’s Largest Pride Parade One Week After the Berlin Attack
Olivia Sheed describes attending WorldPride Amsterdam one week after a van attack and subsequent stabbings at Berlin Pride killed one person and injured 29. Although she feared that violence might discourage attendance or lead to heavily restricted celebrations, Amsterdam’s extensive rainbow decorations, heightened security and large crowds created a welcoming atmosphere. Around 300,000 people attended the canal parade, turning their visible celebration and continued presence into an act of LGBTQ+ resilience and protest.
