Michael Oatley obituary
Michael Oatley, a former senior MI6 officer, played a central role in maintaining secret communications between the British government and the Provisional IRA, helping lay groundwork for ceasefires and the eventual Northern Ireland peace process. Working closely with intermediary Brendan Duddy, he facilitated covert exchanges during pivotal moments including the 1975 ceasefire and the 1980–81 hunger strikes. His efforts contributed to dialogue that later supported the Good Friday agreement. After retiring, he worked in private security and continued engagement with issues related to Northern Ireland. He is survived by his wife and children.
