Major supermarkets pull disposable barbecues from shelves amid wildfire risk
Major supermarket chains, including Asda, Co-op, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, have temporarily withdrawn disposable barbecues because hot, dry conditions are increasing wildfire risks across the UK. Wilko and The Range have also removed them, while Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have not sold them since 2022; Morrisons appeared to continue online sales. The National Fire Chiefs Council says avoiding disposable barbecues in countryside, parks and moorland would significantly reduce fire risk. Labour MP Jon Pearce welcomed the retailers’ action but called for mandatory guidance, a possible ban in public spaces and longer-term government planning for worsening wildfire risks linked to climate change.

Expert issues warning to parents climbing Welsh mountain for 'baby selfies'

Other experienced hikers and mountain leaders argue that ascents can be safe with suitable carriers, detailed weather and route checks, proper insulation, emergency supplies and a willingness to turn back. Experts recommend the less exposed Llanberis Path as the safest route for families, while stressing that conditions can change rapidly.
