Cleveland fire union calls for action against more cuts
The Cleveland Fire Brigades Union is urging action against further fire-service cuts after a firefighter was hospitalised following a restaurant fire in Middlesbrough. Cleveland Fire Authority plans to consult on measures to address a £1.2m deficit, including reducing hours at Thornaby Fire Station and capping overtime. The union says staffing has fallen significantly since 2010 and that only six of the service’s minimum 14 fire engines were operational when the blaze began. Cleveland Fire Brigade disputes that the injury was caused by its tactics or available resources and points to established mutual-aid arrangements. Local MPs say the proposed reductions reflect funding pressures rather than lower demand, while the government says it is reviewing national funding formulas.

Meningitis jab plea to North East and Cumbria students
Health officials are urging eligible students in North East England and Cumbria to begin their meningitis B vaccinations before starting university or residential further education. More than 4,450 free doses have already been administered in the region through community pharmacies, as part of a summer programme launched after a deadly outbreak among students in Kent. Eligible groups include Year 13 pupils in England and Wales, equivalent students elsewhere in the UK, and 18- to 25-year-olds entering residential education for the first time. Because two doses are required four weeks apart, officials recommend starting promptly. Students living in halls are considered at greater risk because the bacteria can spread through close contact and shared accommodation, although the risk to the wider community is described as very low. Previous MenACWY vaccination does not replace the MenB vaccine.

Bishop Auckland forest mountain bike trail to shut
Danny Hart's Descend Bike Park in Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, is expected to close in August 2028 when its lease expires. Forestry England plans six months of essential tree felling and says the trails cannot safely remain open during the work; it also says the operator was informed when the current lease was signed in 2023. The park's director Paul Hart, users and Bishop Auckland MP Sam Rushworth argue that closure would remove an important community and outdoor facility, particularly for children, and leave a major gap for downhill mountain biking in the North East.

Cleveland PCC funds support for LGBTQ+ hate crime victims
Cleveland’s police and crime commissioner allocated £12,384 to Hart Gables to expand support for LGBTQ+ hate crime victims through one‑to‑one and group sessions. Archaeology dig in Nenthead asks villagers to volunteer gardens
An archaeology project in Nenthead, Cumbria, is inviting residents to offer their gardens for one‑metre test pits aimed at uncovering artefacts from the village’s lead‑mining past. Volunteers will dig under archaeological supervision, with expectations of finding domestic items such as pottery, clothing fasteners and animal bones that reflect everyday life in the 18th and 19th centuries. The initiative is part of the Land of Lead and Silver project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England. Organisers hope the effort will deepen residents’ connection to local history, while any discoveries considered treasure will be reported under the Treasure Act.
