Merseyside Police sergeant's secret life holidaying with EncroChat criminals
Former Merseyside Police sergeant Daniel Hughes was convicted of eight counts of unauthorized access to computer material and three counts of unlawfully disclosing personal data after repeatedly searching police systems for information about criminal associates. He socialized, holidayed and attended race meetings with EncroChat-linked offenders, including Steven Noone, Phillip Lam, Anthony Harrison and Frederick Connolly, while also sharing gossip about investigations in WhatsApp chats. The court found no evidence that Hughes disclosed restricted intelligence directly to criminals or acted for financial gain, but prosecutors and the judge said his conduct undermined public confidence in police systems. Hughes, who had been injured twice in service and suffered from PTSD and autism, was dismissed by Merseyside Police and sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for two years, 10 rehabilitation days, 250 hours of unpaid work and a £750 fine.

Smiling man punched and kicked helpless bulldog to death
A 23‑year‑old man, Luke Walker, received a suspended 17‑month sentence after admitting to repeatedly beating and ultimately killing a French bulldog named Buddy, whom he had agreed to look after. Evidence presented at Liverpool Crown Court showed a pattern of prior abuse, with the dog suffering broken bones and prolonged pain. Walker initially lied about the circumstances of the dog’s death before confessing to attacking the animal after becoming angry over mess in his flat. The court considered his mental health issues, history of self‑harm, autism diagnosis and background of vulnerability, leading the judge to impose a suspended sentence with rehabilitation requirements, unpaid work, mental health treatment and a ban on owning or caring for dogs.

Liverpool primary school headteacher charged with child indecent image offences
A Liverpool primary school headteacher, Matthew Hargreaves, has been charged with multiple offences relating to indecent images of children, including making and taking images across categories A to C. Great Schools Trust confirmed he was suspended immediately upon his earlier arrest, stressing that the allegations do not involve pupils at King's Northway Primary Academy. Merseyside Police said Hargreaves remains in custody as specialist investigators continue enquiries, urging the public not to share information that could affect the case. A letter from acting principal Mark Newton informed parents of the developments and reaffirmed safeguarding measures. Authorities including the CPS and Liverpool City Council have been contacted as the investigation continues.
