Tadej Pogačar dominated the Vuelta a España’s first major mountain test, attacking 50 kilometres from the finish and extending his overall lead by nearly three minutes. Sepp Kuss finished fifth in the chase group and moved to fourth overall, 23 seconds behind second-placed Primož Roglič, putting himself among the riders competing for the final podium. Kuss had hoped to join the early breakaway to anticipate Pogačar’s attack but could not do so, and acknowledged the difficulty of racing against Pogačar’s superiority. ‘I was up all night’ – Oscar Onley hit by another setback but comes through first Vuelta a España GC showdown
Oscar Onley finished fourth on the Vuelta a España’s first mountain stage despite spending the previous night suffering from stomach problems. Tadej Pogačar attacked roughly 50 kilometres from the finish and won solo by nearly three minutes, while Onley rode with the main general-classification contenders and moved up to fifth overall. Onley acknowledged that Pogačar’s red jersey was effectively beyond reach and said he was instead targeting the battle for second, where he trails Primož Roglič by 24 seconds and Enric Mas by 13 seconds.
