Do our leaders think it’s sensible to show Russia how deeply we’re involved in this war?
Patrick Mercer argues that British political and military leaders are recklessly revealing the UK’s involvement in strikes against Russia while failing to strengthen national defences. He criticizes the government over military recruitment, naval capability and what he sees as complacency after reports of British drones conducting deep strikes in Russia. Citing explosions at ammunition factories in Bulgaria and Italy, warnings from Sergey Lavrov and Vladimir Putin, and Russia’s escalating operations in Ukraine, Mercer says Britain risks retaliation without possessing sufficient military capacity to respond.

Russia poses real threat to UK as Andy Burnham warned of 'military crisis': Patrick Mercer
Russia's intensifying war effort ahead of its September parliamentary elections could enable mass mobilisation and strengthen Vladimir Putin's control through a loyal veteran political class. Ukraine is targeting Russian industry, retail infrastructure and oil transport to undermine public morale, while Moscow has responded by attacking Ukrainian ports and trade routes, effectively isolating Ukraine from the sea. The resulting escalation raises concerns that Britain, which supports Kyiv and is credited with intelligence and defense cooperation, could face Russian retaliation. Former adviser John Bew has warned that Prime Minister Andy Burnham may confront an imminent military crisis, while the UK's inadequate armed forces could leave it poorly prepared.
