Lidl responds to teacher's mission to fix historic Wavertree eyesore
Teacher Lydia Jane Alice has launched the Save the Abbey Liverpool campaign to find a new community use for Wavertree's former Abbey Cinema, a 1939 Art Deco landmark with links to Liverpool's musical heritage. Lidl, which acquired the site in 2020 after plans to demolish it were opposed, says it is exploring options with local stakeholders and continues to market and maintain the property. DWP warning as drivers could face ban over unpaid benefit debt
New DWP powers being rolled out from October could allow courts to temporarily disqualify drivers who owe at least £1,000 in benefit debt, can afford to repay it and have deliberately avoided doing so. The measures also permit direct deductions from bank accounts. Driving bans will be a last resort, decided by a court, and may initially be suspended while agreed repayments are made. The government says the powers target persistent debtors rather than people facing financial hardship and encourages anyone contacted by the DWP to arrange an affordable repayment plan.
