Hundreds of rapists and paedos set to be freed early to tackle prison overcrowding
Thousands of offenders, including more than 100 rapists, are expected to become eligible for early release from September to ease pressure on overcrowded prisons. Conservative analysis warns that the policy could see dangerous criminals freed sooner, prompting criticism from Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy. Andy Burnham, incoming prime minister, is examining ways to prevent the early release of those convicted of serious sexual offences. Nearly 9,000 victims have been notified about potential early releases under new laws that allow prisoners to be freed halfway through their sentences if they maintain good behaviour. The Ministry of Justice states the measures are necessary to avoid running out of prison space and that the most dangerous offenders remain excluded from early release.
