Ellesmere is marking the 150th birthday of Eglantyne Jebb, who was born locally in 1876 and co-founded Save the Children with her sister Dorothy in 1919 after witnessing the suffering of children following World War One. Celebrations include remembrance events, flower-laying at the Jebb memorial garden, new artwork by local artist Sally Poynton, and a civic service and exhibition in October. Jebb later worked in Geneva with the League of Nations and drafted the charter that became the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Her great-great-nephew Richard Jebb reflects on the responsibility of preserving her humanitarian legacy.
