How The Turtles’ big 1967 hit could have easily been their last song
The Turtles discovered the demo of Happy Together at a moment of commercial struggle and, despite its rough condition, recognized its melodic potential. Written by Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner of The Magicians, the song was offered to several bands before reaching the group. After testing it on the road and bringing in orchestral support, The Turtles crafted a polished psych-pop arrangement that revived their career and became their signature hit.
