The Turtles discovered the demo of Happy Together at a moment of commercial struggle and, despite its rough condition, recognized its melodic potential. Written by Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner of The Magicians, the song was offered to several bands before reaching the group. After testing it on the road and bringing in orchestral support, The Turtles crafted a polished psych-pop arrangement that revived their career and became their signature hit.

A major internal rift within the Ramones emerged in the mid-1980s, centred on drummer Richie Ramone’s departure following disputes over finances and merchandising rights. Joey Ramone publicly criticised Richie for leaving abruptly before major shows, while Richie later described feeling denied fair compensation. Their conflict highlighted longstanding tensions within the band as they navigated shifting lineups and growing commercial pressures during an era when their sound and internal relationships were changing.
