The Historic Yorkshire Buildings That Survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries
Yorkshire’s abbeys and priories were established after the Norman Conquest for religious, charitable and administrative purposes, with Benedictine, Cistercian and Augustinian orders founding prominent sites across the county. Bolton Priory prospered as a major landholder before suffering disruption during the Scottish wars and eventual suppression by Henry VIII in 1540. Although much of the priory was stripped and damaged, its nave and tower continued to serve local worshippers, followed by extensive restoration under successive Dukes of Devonshire. Railways and Victorian interest turned the site into a major tourist destination, while later conservation, refurbishment and online services helped sustain its public and religious role.
