Thinking of Trying to Photograph the Eclipse? I Tried So Hard to Shoot the Last One with My iPhone Pro Max and My DSLR — but in the End I'm Glad I Abandoned Both
Philip Berne recounts photographing the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse from Burlington, Vermont, with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, Google Pixel 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Vaonis Hestia telescope and Nikon D750 DSLR. The iPhone-telescope combination produced his best images, while the other phones and DSLR struggled with zoom, exposure and changing light. He concludes that attempting to manage too much equipment diminished the experience, and advises eclipse viewers to bring one simple camera plan—or prioritize witnessing totality over capturing it.
