Cameroon weighs femicide law as anger over more killings rises

Associated Press 15 ott 2026 English

Stile giornalistico, Interpretativo: Primarily reported news, but includes emotionally charged accounts and critical assessments from activists and victims' relatives.

Contesto politico, Centro: Reports on proposed legislation and institutional shortcomings without advancing a partisan position.

Cameroon is considering a bill that would make femicide a standalone crime as reported gender-related killings of women rise to nearly 70 this year, up from at least 50 in 2023 and 67 in 2024. The death of teacher Geraldine Achiah, whose husband has been charged with murder and denies killing her, has intensified calls for justice. Activists say weak laws, delays, corruption, intimidation and inadequate support for survivors contribute to the crisis. Protests have taken place in major cities, and the bill is expected to go before parliament in November; advocates say legal reform must be paired with broader action against systemic barriers.

Cameroonians Neglect Covid-19 Safety Precautions

Africanews 15 ott 2020 English Stile giornalistico: Equilibrato

The article discusses the lax attitude of residents in major cities of Cameroon towards Covid-19 preventive measures such as social distancing and wearing face masks. Despite the government's efforts, including a mobile Covid-19 screening strategy termed 'Track, Test and Treat', and daily press briefings to update the public, many Cameroonians believe they are naturally immune to the virus. Prof Yap Boum, deputy head of Cameroon’s Public Health Emergency Research Centre, acknowledges the public's negligence due to the high recovery rate and low death rate. The reasons behind the high healing rate in Cameroon are still being investigated, with possibilities including boosted immunity, exposure to numerous tropical diseases, or the youthful demographic of the population.

How the Zai farming technique is transforming soil fertility in North Cameroon

Mongabay 1 set 2024 English

Stile giornalistico, Informativo: Mostly factual with some subjective statements from farmers and experts.

In North Cameroon, the Zai farming technique is revitalizing soil fertility and improving crop yields. Farmers like Pierre Adamou and Aiessatou have adopted this traditional West African method, which involves digging holes to mix compost, grain, and rainwater, significantly increasing their harvests. The technique is part of broader efforts by organizations like FODER and WWF to combat land degradation and desertification around Bénoué National Park. Despite its benefits, the labor-intensive nature of Zai has deterred some farmers. The Cameroon government, alongside NGOs, is committed to restoring degraded landscapes, aiming to integrate various stakeholders for sustainable environmental management.

Lucy Zambo, kidney patient

Bongben 6 apr 2021 English

Kidney patients at the Yaoundé University Teaching Hospital in Cameroon have been facing a dire shortage of dialysis kits, leading to a blockade of the hospital by patients demanding the essential supplies. The kits finally arrived on March 5 after the protest, but concerns remain about the sustainability of the supply. Patients like Lucy Zambo and Irene Ojong Obi are struggling with the effects of the shortage, which prevents them from undergoing necessary dialysis treatments. The hospital has a history of kit shortages and machine breakdowns, affecting the ability of patients to receive treatment, which should occur thrice weekly. The government has subsidized the cost of dialysis, but access to machines and kits is still a significant challenge. Questions are being raised about the hospital's planning and management of supplies, but the Director of the hospital has not provided any answers.

AWiM News 28 ago 2026 English

Its programmes have supported women’s leadership, representation and gender-responsive journalism, including at Crown Television in Zambia. Co-founders Yemisi Akinbobola and Olubamidele Ogunleye credit the organisation’s community and partners for its progress while identifying artificial intelligence, digital disruption, journalist safety, media freedom and unequal access to opportunity as ongoing challenges. The anniversary will be celebrated alongside AWiM26 in Windhoek, Namibia, on 3–4 December 2026.

AI Is Reshaping Journalism. Are African Newsrooms Ready?

AWiM News 6 ago 2026 English

Stile giornalistico, Informativo: Predominantly factual and evidence-based, with advocacy for responsible AI adoption and stronger newsroom safeguards.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in African newsrooms for transcription, translation, research, summarisation and multimedia production, but formal training and organisational policies have not kept pace. A Safer-Media Initiative survey found that 95% of Nigerian journalists use AI at least weekly, while only 10% have received structured newsroom training; African Women in Media similarly found that adoption is often driven by individual journalists. Experts stress that AI should support rather than replace editorial judgement, with independent verification needed to counter hallucinations, misinformation, bias, copyright risks and confidentiality concerns. African languages and contexts remain underrepresented in AI systems, while women journalists often use the tools without sufficient influence over newsroom policy. Investment in digital skills, ethical safeguards, inclusive governance and ongoing professional development is needed to ensure AI strengthens public-interest journalism.
