The Israeli police, led by Chief Kobi Shabtai and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have decided to arm civilians to defend cities against Hamas terrorists. This initiative involves forming 347 new emergency units comprising 13,200 civilian volunteers who will receive weapons and protective gear. The move comes in response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in over 1,400 Israeli deaths. In retaliation, Israel has launched intensive bombings on Gaza, causing approximately 2,750 deaths. The government is also easing gun permit criteria for those with basic military training in conflict zones. Since the attack, there has been a significant increase in gun permit applications.
