Source: Badr forces control the area from which the Kormor gas field was reportedly attacked

Voice of America (Dengî Amerika) 4 Feb 2025 Kurdish (Sorani)

Reporting style, Factual: Primarily factual reporting on security events and official statements

Badr-affiliated Hashd al-Shaabi forces were reported to control the area near Bashir in southern Kirkuk, from where a drone attack targeted the Kormor gas field. Although the attack caused no casualties, it renewed scrutiny of militia activity around the strategic site. The U.S. Embassy condemned the strike, and the Iraqi prime minister formed an investigative committee to determine its causes. Analysts attributed repeated militia attacks to tensions between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region over energy exports, as well as disputes between Iran and Dana Gas, the Emirati company operating the field. Plans to expand gas production have been hindered by ongoing security threats.
