Tsvangirai: Government to Blame for House Demolitions

263Chat 9 Feb 2016 English

Reporting style, Informative: Mostly factual reporting, while presenting Tsvangirai’s critical allegations and the government’s actions.

Political context, Centre: Reports a political dispute and attributes criticism to Tsvangirai, without a clear editorial position.

Morgan Tsvangirai blamed the Zimbabwean government and Local Government Minister Savior Kasukuwere for demolitions of homes, calling them a human-rights violation. He compared the campaign to Operation Murambatsvina in 2005, which the United Nations said affected hundreds of thousands directly and millions indirectly. Tsvangirai said councils should relocate residents to properly planned settlements and accused Kasukuwere of interfering with elected local authorities; his party planned to challenge the minister in court. Demolitions left families vulnerable in several Harare suburbs, while the City of Harare separately banned housing cooperatives from February 3, 2016, to counter land barons.
