European airlines suspend flights to destinations such as Dubai amid US-Iran tensions

Bloomberg Línea Portuguese

Reporting style, Informative: Mostly factual reporting based on airline statements and flight data, with limited contextual framing about geopolitical risks.

Political context, Centre: Straight news coverage that reports airline decisions and geopolitical developments without advocating a political position.

European airlines suspended or altered flights to Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam, Tel Aviv, Tehran, Bahrain and other destinations as tensions between the United States and Iran raised concerns about the safety of Gulf and surrounding airspace. Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, British Airways, Transavia and Luxair cited precautionary measures or the regional security situation. The disruptions followed comments by Donald Trump about U.S. military deployments and possible action against Iran, recalling broader flight cancellations and airspace closures after an Iranian missile strike in 2024.

‘We may do it a little bit further’: Trump signals further Iran strikes as Hormuz attacks escalate

TRENDS MENA 23 Oct 2026 English

Reporting style, Informative: Primarily factual reporting that attributes contested claims to their sources, with limited interpretive framing around escalating risks.

Political context, Centre: Straightforward geopolitical and conflict reporting presents claims and positions from multiple parties without a clear partisan editorial stance.

Donald Trump has suggested the United States could launch further strikes on Iran, while denying a decision to resume attacks has been announced and a White House spokesperson says no strike will occur before the US midterm elections. Iran warns of forceful retaliation, and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have escalated amid reported damage to seven tankers, a US blockade, and sharply reduced shipping traffic. Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia have prompted international travel warnings as Yemen's government presses an offensive against the group. The fighting is worsening Yemen's humanitarian emergency, with the WHO reporting acute shortages at 42 Taiz health facilities and thousands of casualties since August. Diplomatic efforts involving Qatar and the United States seek to restore freedom of navigation and end the Iran war, while the IMF forecasts economic contraction in Saudi Arabia and across the region.

IRGC Announces Shift to 'Offensive and Asymmetrical' Doctrine in Case of Attack

TRENDS MENA 22 Oct 2026 English

Reporting style, Informative: Predominantly factual reporting that attributes claims to officials and sources, though some framing and unverified allegations appear.

Political context, Centre: Straight news coverage presents competing governments' statements and security developments without an evident partisan stance.

Iran's IRGC says it is moving from a defensive posture to an offensive, asymmetrical doctrine and threatens to invade any country that attacks Iran. Tehran nevertheless says it may return to diplomacy if Washington demonstrates genuine interest in negotiations. The nuclear dispute remains unresolved, with Iran refusing to transfer enriched uranium abroad and the United States demanding verifiable limits on enrichment and nuclear capabilities. Iran has also appealed to the United Nations over the US blockade of its ports, while Israel's threats and reported air exercises add to escalation risks. Attacks in Saudi Arabia and intensified fighting in Yemen have widened regional security concerns, contributed to higher oil prices, and prompted US departure orders for some diplomatic staff in Saudi Arabia. Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia have agreed to cooperate on defence production.

Iran faces political turbulence ahead with key elections after sanctions lifted

Abc 16 Feb 2016 English

Iran is preparing for crucial elections for its parliament and the Assembly of Experts on February 26, following the lifting of international sanctions due to a nuclear deal with Western powers. The elections will be a contest between moderates supporting President Hassan Rouhani and conservative hardliners. The Guardian Council, overseen by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has disqualified many reformist candidates, which could impact the direction of government policies and the 2017 presidential election. The Assembly of Experts, responsible for appointing the next Supreme Leader, is also significant as Ayatollah Khamenei is aging and has had health issues. Despite President Rouhani's efforts to ensure a 'free and fair election,' the conservative establishment poses a significant challenge to his reformist agenda.

Fire engulfs Dubai hotel before New Year’s Eve fireworks

Theguardian 1 Jan 2016 English

A fire broke out in the Address Downtown hotel in Dubai on New Year's Eve, engulfing 20 of its 63 floors. British citizen Angus Viller recounted carrying his disabled mother from the 15th floor to safety. The Dubai government reported one person suffered a heart attack, one was moderately injured, and 16 sustained minor injuries. Early reports suggest an electrical fault may have caused the blaze. The fire, which started on the 20th floor, was largely controlled by the next day. Despite the fire, a large fireworks display at the Burj Khalifa proceeded. Concerns have been raised about the safety of Dubai's high-rise buildings, especially regarding the materials used for cladding. The incident follows previous fires in other Dubai skyscrapers, prompting a review of safety codes in 2013, though many existing buildings have not been retrofitted with the new safety measures.
