Eurovision winner ineligible to host if involved in ‘armed conflict’
The European Broadcasting Union has revised the Eurovision rules for 2027 so that a winning broadcaster cannot automatically host the contest if its state is involved in armed conflict, a sensitive geopolitical situation or another serious security risk. An independent security body will assess the situation, and the EBU may appoint an alternative host broadcaster. The changes follow withdrawals and threats to withdraw over Israel’s participation during the Gaza war, as well as the UK hosting the 2023 contest on Ukraine’s behalf. Other revisions raise the minimum performer age from 16 to 18 and require lead vocals and the main melody to be performed live. Bulgaria will host the 2027 contest after Dara won in Vienna.
