Ambulance delays contributed to the death of a Middlesbrough man who deserved a chance to survive
An inquest found that a 67-minute delay by the North East Ambulance Service in reaching Andrew Edward Watson in Langley Moor in 2019 probably contributed to his death from quinsy, a life-threatening throat infection that obstructed his airway. Coroner Crispin Oliver criticised the categorisation system, which gave Watson a lower-priority response because he made the emergency calls himself, and said the condition was no longer survivable when paramedics arrived. The inquest also examined alleged downgrading of harm assessments and weaknesses in the ambulance service’s investigation and governance processes. Watson’s family said they had spent nearly seven years seeking answers, while the service apologised and said it had invested in additional ambulances and paramedics and improved its procedures.
