South East Water told to improve as villagers brand outage issues ‘shocking’
South East Water has been told to improve after thousands of Kent customers experienced repeated supply disruptions, with around 400 properties still facing low pressure or no water. Supplies were restored to 7,400 homes in Herne Bay, Rough Common and Blean, but storage tanks remained critically low and customers were urged to restrict use to essential purposes. Defra demanded faster action on leaks and drought plans, and MP Katie Lam called for fundamental transformation. The latest incident follows earlier failures and a £30.5 million Ofwat redress package covering previous disruptions affecting hundreds of thousands of households in Kent and Sussex.

Councils fear planning overhaul to boost housebuilding will weaken local voices
The UK Government has proposed changes to England’s National Planning Policy Framework, including a presumption in favour of housing near well-connected railway stations, to accelerate delivery of 1.5 million homes over five years. The County Councils Network warns that national rules could override local plans, weaken community input, shift power towards developers and produce unsustainable or piecemeal development, particularly in rural areas. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner says mandatory local plans, brownfield-first development and green-belt protections will preserve local influence while ensuring homes are built alongside infrastructure. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook also cited the Iran conflict, weaker buyer demand and rising materials costs as obstacles to construction.
