Solar Eclipse Eye Damage and What to Do If You Looked Without Eye Protection
A partial solar eclipse visible across the UK led experts to warn that viewing the Sun without certified eye protection can cause solar retinopathy and potentially permanent central-vision loss. Damage may occur even after less than a minute of exposure, with symptoms often delayed and including blurred or distorted vision, dark spots, altered colour vision, light sensitivity and reduced sight. People experiencing symptoms or concerns are advised to seek prompt assessment from an optometrist. There is no specific treatment, although many cases heal over time; prolonged exposure increases the risk of lasting damage.

Man who died in jail after disorder was ‘strange’ after arrest, inquest hears
Evidence at an inquest detailed that Peter Lynch, who died by hanging in HMP Moorland in 2024, displayed unusual behaviour after his arrest for involvement in disorder outside an asylum seeker hotel. A custody sergeant described Lynch as confused and uncooperative but assessed him as fit for interview, later acknowledging it might have been appropriate to refer him to mental health specialists. Medical testimony confirmed the cause of death and indicated no role from his existing health conditions. Proceedings also noted the discovery of a flag in his home linked to far-right ideology. The inquest is ongoing.

Teen jailed for murdering mum by running her over while inhaling nitrous oxide balloons
A 19‑year‑old man, Kian Bateman, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years for murdering Shelley Davies by driving his car into a group outside a Cardiff social club after inhaling nitrous oxide. Bateman struck Davies, who was lying on the ground, and seriously injured her partner, David Bratcher. The judge ruled that although Bateman did not see Davies, he intended to seriously harm Bratcher, making him guilty of murder. He was also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm, disqualified from driving for over 21 years and ordered to take an extended re‑test. Statements from the CPS, police, and the victim’s family highlighted the deliberate nature of the act and the lasting impact on loved ones.
