Catching the 'Black Widow': How the Web Finally Closed in on the Fugitive Fraudster
Pamela Gwinnett exploited Joan Green, an elderly woman with dementia, by isolating her from family and misusing her finances, taking almost £300,000 through power-of-attorney and joint-account arrangements. A family video documenting her treatment of Green helped support the case, while the Court of Protection later suspended her authority. Gwinnett fled to Tenerife after breaching bail, was convicted and sentenced in absentia to six years in prison, and was eventually tracked down, extradited to the UK and returned to custody. Green's grandson David Bolton said Gwinnett had shown no remorse and expressed relief at her imprisonment.

Black Widow fraudster jailed after fleeing to Tenerife for 16 months
Fraudster Pamela Gwinnett received an additional two-month sentence at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to absconding from bail and fleeing to Tenerife for 16 months. She had already been sentenced to six years in prison for stealing nearly £300,000 from vulnerable Chorley pensioner Joan Green by posing as her carer, isolating her from family and exploiting her finances. The judge rejected claims that mental-health difficulties justified the escape, while Green’s grandson said Gwinnett had shown no remorse. Gwinnett was also ordered to repay £350,180, with property reportedly seized to help recover the money.
