A cyclist riding a rented e-bike was taken to hospital with a head injury after a road collision on Kennington Park Road in Kennington, near Oval, at approximately 5:50 p.m. on September 1. The London Ambulance Service treated the man at the scene and transported him to hospital, while part of the road was temporarily closed. The Metropolitan Police provided no further details.

Planned strike action by more than 1,500 Arriva North London bus drivers has been paused after the company made a significantly improved offer following talks with Unite. The proposed walkouts, which would have affected more than 40 routes from September into October, concerned excessive working hours, bus cab temperatures reaching 40°C, poor toilet facilities and post-shift working requirements. The offer will be put to drivers in a ballot, so the dispute is not yet resolved. Unite says it will continue pressing for improved treatment and a proposed Bill of Rights for London bus drivers.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder while travelling by train to France after a house fire on Berkeley Avenue in Hounslow. A 48-year-old woman died from her injuries, while another woman, aged 40, remains critically ill in hospital. Seven other people were treated for minor injuries and discharged. Police, led by Detective Chief Inspector Neil John, are investigating the circumstances and the cause of the fire and are appealing for witnesses and relevant footage.

London is expected to experience increasingly humid and unsettled weather from Wednesday, August 26, followed by heavy rain and thunderstorms later in the week. Around 1,500 Unite members employed by Arriva North London are set to resume strike action from August 25 over hot working conditions in bus cabs, after rejecting a proposed settlement. Unite says cooling systems have left temperatures exceeding 40°C, creating risks including fatigue, dehydration and heat-related illness. The action is expected to cause little or no service on 42 routes serving North London and Essex, with further stoppages scheduled in September and October. Nearly half of London’s 250-mile Underground network runs above ground, with only the Victoria and Waterloo & City lines entirely underground. The network originated with the Metropolitan Railway, whose early routes used the cut-and-cover construction method. Esri UK research found that 86% of the Metropolitan line is above ground, while underground sections are concentrated mainly in central London. The term “Underground” became widely established in the early 20th century alongside the network’s iconic roundel symbol.
