Unpaid carers reaching crisis before getting help from council, damning report finds
The Care Quality Commission rated Barnsley Council’s adult social care services as requiring improvement, citing lengthy waits for carers’ assessments, complex financial assessment processes, and gaps in specialist provision that forced residents to seek care outside the area. Data-recording errors suggested significantly inflated waiting times, though actual delays were still substantial. Some carers reached crisis point before receiving support, and the financial system created confusion and anxiety for service users while hindering staff relationships. Positive findings included strong safeguarding performance, effective partnership work, and a successful physical activity programme for older residents. The report calls for major improvements in assessments, data quality, specialist services, and engagement with underrepresented groups.
