‘Crying’ sailor survives one month at sea by licking plastic bags
California sailor Kai Sato survived more than a month adrift in the Pacific after his mast broke during a solo voyage from the Catalina Islands. When his fuel and drinking water ran out, he collected condensation in plastic bags, licked the moisture, and ate oatmeal, fish and squid that landed on his boat. He improvised repairs with PVC pipes and kayak paddles, maintained his mental wellbeing through meditation and conversations with the sea, and was eventually rescued by a Pasha Hawaii vessel near Hawaii. Despite the ordeal, Sato remains determined to undertake another sailing expedition, potentially to the Philippines.
