New compulsory tests for drivers over 70 could be introduced under Andy Burnham
The UK Government is considering mandatory eyesight tests for drivers when they reach 70, with possible cognitive assessments and licence revocation for those who fail. The proposals would replace the current system, under which motorists renew their licences at 70 and every three years afterward while self-reporting medical conditions. More than 10,000 licences have reportedly been revoked or denied renewal since the start of last year, and that number could increase under tougher rules. No final decision or implementation timetable has been announced. Motoring expert Matt Crole-Rees supports mandatory eye testing, noting that drivers may not recognise when their vision falls below the legal standard.
