Philip Watson, 60, a former teaching assistant at Maplewood School in Sunderland, was convicted of four counts of indecent assault involving three vulnerable boys. Newcastle Crown Court heard that he abused pupils in settings including a camping trip, a school minibus and showers, after previously being jailed in 2017 for abusing three other former pupils. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and remains subject to a lifelong sex-offender registration requirement. The judge described the abuse as systematic exploitation of a trusted position and highlighted the lasting psychological harm suffered by the victims, while Watson continued to deny the offences.

Amie Ford, 30, of Westerhope, was jailed for 26 months after pleading guilty to fraud by false representation against a man she met on Tinder. Over roughly 11 months, she used fabricated messages impersonating solicitors, banks, Northumbria Police and a relative to obtain more than £10,000, access personal information, arrange loans and other financial products, and sell the victim’s laptop. The victim suffered substantial debt, damage to his credit and mortgage prospects, and serious emotional trauma. Ford left the UK for about five years before being arrested at Newcastle Airport in 2023. The sentencing judge described her conduct as calculated, cynical and heartless.

Mark Thornton, a 60-year-old from Tynemouth with previous convictions for attempting to contact a child for sexual activity, pleaded guilty to breaching a sexual harm prevention order and sex offender notification requirements. Officers found that he had downloaded Facebook, TikTok, Telegram and X, used unregistered aliases, and failed to register a tablet and bank card. Although the judge said Thornton posed a high risk of serious harm to children and had initially planned imprisonment, he received an 18-month sentence suspended for two years, programme requirements and £150 in costs after the court heard that his terminally ill civil partner’s condition was a significant mitigating factor.
