Ann Widdecombe funeral sees family and friends gather for religious farewell
Around 100 relatives, friends, politicians and broadcasters attended Ann Widdecombe’s private requiem Mass at Buckfast Abbey in Devon. The former Conservative minister, Brexit Party MEP and Reform UK spokeswoman died on July 8 after allegedly being struck with a hammer; Joshua Kerry has been charged with her murder. Nigel Farage did not attend, reportedly to respect the family’s request for privacy, but is expected at a later public memorial. Tributes highlighted Widdecombe’s Catholic faith, political convictions and public service, while memorial donations will support the Leprosy Mission and Christian Endeavour Hostel projects in India.

Man who thought criminals had bugged his house killed wife then himself, inquest hears
An inquest heard that 71-year-old Anthony Buxton strangled his wife Michelle, 69, at their home in Camelford, Cornwall, before stabbing himself. Buxton had developed severe anxiety, paranoia and delusions that an organised crime gang had bugged the house and was targeting his family. His son described a marked deterioration in his behaviour, while mental-health professionals said he had been referred for assessment and was considered suitable for talking therapies. The coroner concluded that Michelle was unlawfully killed and that Anthony took his own life, noting that neither relatives nor practitioners had believed she was at risk.
