Mexico and Peru restore diplomatic relations after asylum row
Mexico and Peru have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after tensions caused by Mexico granting asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who faced charges over her alleged role in Pedro Castillo’s 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress. Chávez received safe passage to Mexico, although Peru retains the right to seek her extradition. Both governments cited historic ties, cooperation, international law and the UN Charter in announcing the reconciliation. The agreement follows the inauguration of Peru’s new president, Keiko Fujimori, while Mexico continues to support Chávez and Castillo.

It's a hell of a situation: Spain grapples with major wildfires
Wildfires have ravaged large parts of Spain, affecting about 77,000 hectares and forcing more than 90,000 people to evacuate, including over 56,500 in the Madrid region. Firefighters are battling major blazes in Madrid, Ávila, Toledo and Valencia, while authorities cautiously lift some restrictions. A new heatwave, with temperatures approaching 40C, is expected to worsen fire conditions and hinder containment efforts. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared affected areas disaster zones and linked the worsening crisis to climate change, while residents and local officials remain anxious as some fires continue to burn out of control. Portugal is also facing serious wildfire threats.

Woman denies consensual encounter in Top Boy actor rape trial
A woman alleging rape by actor Michael Ward testified that the encounter in a car after a night out in London was not consensual, contradicting Ward’s claim that all sexual activity was consensual. She became emotional while describing shutting down during the incident and telling him multiple times that she needed to leave. A friend told the court the woman appeared distressed afterward, and evidence was presented that she ordered an STI kit and indicated she had been assaulted. Ward, who has denied two rape charges and three counts of sexual assault, previously stated to police that the pair engaged in consensual sex. The trial remains ongoing.
