The science behind players wearing masks at the World Cup
Facial injuries in football often involve nasal fractures that can impair breathing and performance, prompting players to wear protective masks during recovery. Surgeon Farhad Ardesh explains that impacts from elbows, shoulders or heads frequently cause internal damage that may require imaging, delayed bone resetting or later reconstructive surgery. Specialists first manage bleeding and assess for complications such as septal hematoma. While goalkeepers face higher risk due to collisions, widespread mandatory facial protection is unlikely, making optional masks the practical solution for returning athletes.

International Swimming League to pay athletes over £5m in overdue prize money
The International Swimming League will distribute more than $7 million in overdue prize money to over 300 athletes from its 2021 season, with payments issued in four annual installments beginning this year. Commissioner Ben Allen attributed delays to the pandemic, financial strain, and the impact of the war in Europe on key financier Konstantin Grigorishin. Solidarity payments from the same season have already been completed, and all athletes, active or retired, are expected to receive full amounts owed. The league plans to relaunch with potential restructuring following its recent legal victory over World Aquatics, aiming to hold an event in 2026 and return fully in 2027.
