Aamer Anwar calls on Glasgow Council to do more on sex crime
Human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar urged Glasgow City Council to take urgent practical steps to protect women from sexual violence, including improved lighting, CCTV, alleyway gates, night transport and street wardens. Police Scotland figures show that recorded rape and sexual assault in Glasgow city centre rose from 36 incidents in 2000 to 164 in 2025, despite an overall decline in violent and serious crime. The council said it is recruiting staff to enable 24-hour CCTV monitoring and must work with private owners on improvements to city-centre lanes. Speakers including Holly Bruce, Roz Foyer and Claudia Macdonald-Bruce rejected far-right and vigilante claims that their patrols protect women, arguing that such activity targets innocent people and distracts from misogyny and violence by men.
