“I don’t think anything could have prepared me for it”: Ex-councillor reveals true extent of racist abuse
Former Sheffield councillor Nabeela Mowlana describes experiencing escalating racist abuse during her four-year tenure, particularly in the run-up to the May 2026 local elections. She says online commenters attacked her Muslim identity when she promoted a free breakfast club and new council housing, while residents also confronted her with racist remarks and conspiracy theories. Mowlana argues that increasingly mainstream rhetoric from politicians such as Nigel Farage and Rupert Lowe has emboldened such abuse. After losing Park & Arbourthorne to Reform UK’s Matt Smith, she continued to receive hostile messages, but says she seeks equal accountability rather than special protection.
