Suffolk wildfire continues to grow as Burnham pledges support for firefighters
A wildfire at Dunwich Heath near Leiston, Suffolk, expanded to 150 hectares, prompting a major incident response involving more than 100 firefighters and 18 fire engines. Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged additional national resources, while about 50 people were evacuated to Westleton and Cliff House Holiday Park was cleared as a precaution. The blaze, made unpredictable by changing winds and dry conditions, spread into parts of the RSPB Minsmere reserve and caused power cuts, but EDF said operations at nearby Sizewell B nuclear power station were unaffected. Firefighters expected the response to continue for at least 48 hours, with further dry weather forecast.

Crooked funeral director ‘gave victims strangers’ ashes with smile on his face’
A sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court heard that funeral director Robert Bush abused the trust of grieving families over 12 years through Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Bodies were allegedly left for months in poor conditions, families received incorrect ashes, funeral-plan payments were not properly used, and charity donations were stolen. Relatives described profound distress after discovering that ashes placed in jewellery or intended for tattoos belonged to strangers. The case came to light after funeral directors Gary Pickering and Steve Emmerson, assisted by worker Patrick Moore, discovered dozens of bodies at Legacy and alerted police. The court also heard that more than £3 million passed through Bush’s accounts between 2017 and 2024, including substantial personal spending and transfers to his wife.
