Thameslink to upgrade ‘ironing board’ seats for a more comfortable commute
More than 60,000 standard-class seat cushions across all 115 Thameslink trains will be replaced from 2027, with improved backrests and upgraded first-class seat bases rolled out over two years. Seat-back tables will also be added to 70 trains. The changes follow commuter feedback about uncomfortable seats and come after Thameslink operator Greater Thameslink Railway entered public ownership. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and GTR chief executive John Whitehurst presented the plans as an initial step toward improving passenger comfort and railway services.
