Meta Glasses Banned by 'Many' Cinemas Amid Piracy Concerns
Many UK cinemas are banning or restricting camera-enabled Meta smart glasses because of concerns about film piracy and privacy. The UK Cinema Association said operators recognise the devices’ accessibility benefits, particularly for people with visual impairments, but are introducing policies to prohibit or limit their use. The restrictions follow similar measures by theatres and pub chains such as Wetherspoons. Meta defended the glasses’ practical and accessibility functions while agreeing that some venues should not be filmed and calling for rules to be applied consistently.

Why were 17 million parking tickets handed out across the UK last year?
Private parking companies issued a record 16.9 million parking tickets across the UK in the year to March 2026, up from 14.4 million the previous year and 6.8 million in 2018/19. The increase has been attributed by the parking industry to the expansion of managed car parks, while critics accuse companies of confusing signage, aggressive debt collection and unfair charges. A legally backed code of practice intended to cap most penalties at £50 and improve appeals was withdrawn in 2022 after a legal challenge, and a new government consultation closed in September 2025. Parking companies obtained 2.5 million vehicle-owner records from the DVLA in 2025/26, paying £2.50 per record.

Andy Burnham government to introduce major vape law changes from October
New vaping regulations will take effect on 29 October, making it illegal to sell vapes, nicotine products or related components to anyone under 18 and criminalising proxy purchases by adults. The rules also ban promotional giveaways, substantial discounts and discounted coupons for these products, while excluding medical and medicinal products. Fines for illegal sales will range from £200 to £250 initially and could rise substantially if unpaid. Separately, new planning rules will give councils and local residents more influence over the opening of vape shops, including near schools, as part of broader efforts to revive declining high streets.

Andy Burnham 'angry' as five UK water companies allowed to hike bills

Andy Burnham and the Prime Minister condemned the increases, arguing that customers should not fund operational failures amid record pollution, leaks and wider cost-of-living pressures. The Consumer Council for Water demanded proof that every pound is necessary, while Water UK said investment is needed to safeguard supplies, support growth and replace ageing infrastructure.

Met Office verdict on when and where UK will see rain as 'notable change' to follow 38C high
The Met Office says fresher Atlantic air will rapidly end the UK's extreme heat, with temperatures falling from a possible 38°C high to around 20°C–25°C over the weekend. Rain and thunderstorms are expected first in Northern Ireland and Scotland, followed by showers in northwest England and Wales. The plot involved plans to target seven transatlantic flights with homemade hydrogen peroxide explosives disguised as soft drinks and was considered potentially more destructive than the September 11 attacks. Although the three men were cleared of directly targeting aircraft, they were convicted of conspiring to commit mass murder after a retrial. The Parole Board will assess whether they remain a danger outside prison; the plot also led to restrictions on liquids in aircraft hand luggage.

Scientists say three actions from the age of 45 could keep you dementia-free for longer

Researchers and Alzheimer’s Research UK said the findings underscore the importance of managing cardiovascular health, staying active and not smoking, while noting that no approach guarantees dementia prevention.

DWP will take cash directly from bank accounts from October after major law change
From October 2026, the Department for Work and Pensions will be able to recover benefit debts directly from people’s bank accounts without a court order under the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Act 2025. Debtors who have not settled by the end of September may face enforcement, while those with serious debts exceeding £1,000 and no work-related need for a car could ultimately have their driving licences revoked through a court order. The measures also allow limited data-sharing with banks to identify incorrect benefit payments. The government expects the wider approach to save up to £14.6 billion over five years amid rising welfare expenditure, while previous reforms faced Labour backbench opposition over potential effects on disabled people.

Drifting SpaceX Rocket on High-Speed Collision Course with the Moon Will Create New Crater
A SpaceX upper stage that has drifted through deep space since launching commercial lunar landers in January 2025 is expected to strike the Moon near Einstein Crater at about 5,400 mph. Couple Saved £350,000 for a Comfortable Retirement but Say Their Pension Pot Does Not Cover Monthly Bills
Sharon and Sean Taylor of Sheffield saved £350,000 in investments and had a total net worth of about £750,000, expecting it to support a comfortable early retirement until they qualified for state pensions. However, their combined private pension income of £1,400 a month is below their £1,700 in monthly bills, while rising living costs and unexpected repairs have forced them to withdraw £1,500 monthly from savings. A £10,000 holiday and major home repairs further reduced their reserves, leaving them unable to afford planned travel and prompting Sharon to consider part-time work.
