Tests find 'possible carcinogen' in Kinder sweets

04 Jul 2016  |  www.thelocal.de
German food watchdog Foodwatch has called for a recall of Kinder chocolate bars and other snacks after finding dangerous levels of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAHs), which are considered 'likely carcinogenic and mutagenic' by the European Food Safety Authority. Despite the Association of the German Confectionary Agency's claims that the levels are not concerning, Foodwatch insists there are no acceptable levels of MOAHs in food and criticizes the slow legislative action due to powerful business lobbying.

Pegida leader's Hitler Facebook photo emerges

21 Jan 2015  |  www.thelocal.de
Images of Pegida leader Lutz Bachmann styled as Hitler have surfaced, leading to controversy over his social media posts where he referred to immigrants derogatorily. Bachmann dismissed the photo as a joke, linking it to a satirical novel. Pegida, known for its anti-Islamisation stance, has faced criticism for its association with right-wing extremists, though its leaders deny such affiliations. The movement has distanced itself from Germany's neo-nazi National Democratic Party. Bachmann is under police protection following threats on his life.
