Chemistry teacher Sally-Anne Bowen, 65, is on trial at Harrow Crown Court accused of indecently assaulting two boys at Christ’s College in Finchley in the late 1980s, when they were aged 14 or 15. Bowen denies the charges and says one alleged victim fabricated his account, while also citing an undiagnosed medical condition that made intercourse difficult. Former pupil Tobias Oliver testified that Bowen behaved flirtatiously and in a sexually suggestive way in class, crossed boundaries with students and discussed explicit topics. A former head of science also recalled a complaint from one alleged victim’s mother. The trial is continuing.

Conman who lied he was a millionaire with cancer in 'Tinder traps' is jailed
Joseph Gibson, 35, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court to three years and two months in prison after admitting four fraud-by-false-representation offences involving three women and a man. He falsely claimed to be a wealthy former Special Boat Service soldier with cancer, luxury assets and investment expertise, and obtained £68,000 from victims between July 2020 and October 2021. The court rejected Gibson’s request for more time to raise compensation, ordered proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover his assets, and criticized his lack of remorse and attempts to mislead the court about his finances.

Five-year-old Aalim Ahmed died after falling from the kitchen window of his family’s 15th-floor flat in Jacobs House, Plaistow, in May 2024. She told the court that the death could have been prevented if the council had acted. The council disputed whether engineers had been told about problems with the kitchen window, while the hearing remains ongoing.

Mum died after being 'upsold' BBL 'five minutes' before tummy tuck in Turkey
Hayley Dowell, a 38-year-old British mother of three, died in October 2023 after complications during liposuction at BHT Clinic Istanbul Tema Hospital in Turkey. Her husband told Winchester Coroners’ Court that a surgeon offered her a discounted Brazilian butt lift only minutes before the planned tummy tuck and liposuction, leaving little time to consider the risks or complete consent procedures. The coroner warned that such last-minute upselling could lead to future deaths and contrasted it with UK safeguards, including a 14-day cooling-off period. An expert witness described Turkish cosmetic tourism as a conveyor-belt system and called for baseline safety measures. The coroner made no findings about the surgeon’s competence or the surgery itself, which remain subject to litigation in Turkey, but plans to write to the UK Health Secretary and General Medical Council about patient information and the lack of data on the scale of the problem.
