Hastings MP Demands Action on Leaks and Water Shortages
Hastings and Rye MP Helena Dollimore is calling for urgent investment in England’s water infrastructure, including new reservoirs and stronger action to reduce leakage. Lancing College celebrates strong 2026 A-level results
Lancing College reported improved 2026 A-level results, with 26% of grades at A*, up from 24% the previous year, and 54% at A* or A, compared with 53% in 2025. Provisional results show that 98.3% of Brighton and Hove students achieved A* to E grades in 2026, while 63.4% achieved A* to B, continuing a 13-year run of results matching or exceeding national figures. Roedean School recorded its strongest A-level performance in a decade, with 58% of grades at A* or A, 23% at A*, and 81% at A*-B. Brighton and Hove named among UK’s biggest rat hotspots
Brighton and Hove have been identified as major UK rat hotspots, with Brighton’s BN1 and Hove’s BN3 postcode districts among the country’s ten busiest areas for rat call-outs. BN3 recorded 31 incidents, ranking fourth nationally, while the wider BN postcode area ranked second behind Birmingham. Data from JG Pest Control showed rodent-related call-outs in the area rose sharply in summer 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, including increases of 38% for rats, 48% for mice and 41% overall. JG Pest Control managing director James Gale attributed the problem partly to dense housing, food sources, drainage and harbourage in coastal cities, and urged residents and businesses to address how rodents enter properties rather than only treating visible activity.

Brighton bakery sees matcha sales soar by 48 per cent
Matcha sales at Brighton’s Flour Pot Bakery have risen 48% over the past year, with matcha drinks now making up 5% of its barista-made beverages. The bakery attributes the growth to demand for flavoured and visually distinctive drinks. Square data shows matcha sales across the UK rose 30% quarter on quarter and that matcha latte entered the country’s top 10 most-ordered coffees. Research also found that younger consumers, particularly Gen Z, are increasingly willing to try and pay more for coffees containing specialist ingredients such as matcha and ube.

Brighton Family Walks 100km in Memory of Daughter Issy
Matt and Nicki Spiers, their son Jamie and 22 relatives and friends will walk 100km from Eastbourne to Arundel during the South Coast Ultra Challenge in memory of their 13-year-old daughter Issy, who died in January after living with a brain tumour for nearly four years. The challenge aims to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity, with the family's JustGiving campaign having already collected more than £35,000. Hastings Lifeboat Crew Called Out After Blessing of the Sea
RNLI pagers sounded during Hastings’ traditional Blessing of the Sea ceremony after reports that a young person was trapped in the water off St Leonards. McDonald’s in Hastings has reopened following a redesign undertaken as part of the company’s wider restaurant-improvement programme. Stagecoach brings newer buses to Hastings in fleet upgrade
Stagecoach South East has introduced 13 newer double-decker buses and five newer single-decker buses in Hastings, with additional vehicles expected soon. Worthing veteran George Gaterell celebrates 100th birthday
Second World War veteran George Gaterell celebrated his 100th birthday with family, staff and a live concert at Care for Veterans in Worthing. Born in Brighton, he was called up to the Army in 1944, served with the Highland Light Infantry and Royal Armoured Corps, and was posted to Egypt and Palestine. After leaving the Army in 1947, he worked as a bus driver, furniture remover, mechanic and chauffeur. Following a stroke, he moved into residential care, where he remains active in the home’s wellbeing programs. His family thanked the staff for organizing the celebration, which also included a birthday card from the King and Queen.

Sussex ambulance service steps up action on staff violence
South East Coast Ambulance Service is expanding measures to address violence and aggression against ambulance staff after its Shadow Board reviewed the issue and made recommendations. Actions include closer cooperation with police and mental health services, improved team integration, better access to body-worn cameras and additional training. Reported incidents more than doubled from 752 in 2019 to 1,529 in 2024, before declining slightly to 1,421 in 2025. Wakehurst Prairie Provides Haven for Bees and Pollinators
Wakehurst’s six-acre American Prairie in Sussex is providing a climate-resilient habitat for bees, moths and hoverflies as part of the Nature Unlocked programme run by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Surveys have recorded 27 pollinator species on the prairie, including 19 hoverfly species, contributing to 110 bee species across the Wakehurst estate. Researchers are studying pollinator behaviour, including the effects of rising temperatures on bee foraging, while adding nectar-rich plants such as butterfly weed, Blue False Indigo and Dense Blazing Star. The prairie has expanded from a predominantly yellow landscape into a diverse habitat containing more than 80 plant species and is expected to reach peak bloom in August.

Plans for Mental Health Emergency Department in Eastbourne

Midhurst Woman Completes 50km Ultra Challenge Walk
Vicki Harrison, 49, from Midhurst, completed the 50-kilometre North Downs Ultra Challenge through the Surrey Hills for Abby’s Heroes. After pelvic organ surgery and an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosis left her unable to walk properly for nine months, she began rebuilding her fitness with a 10-mile walk in 2023. She has since completed several Ultra Challenges and a 200-mile Sussex Hospice Trail, motivated in part by family experiences with dementia, ovarian cancer and serious illness. Harrison has also written two books and launched Coat On Coat Off Wellbeing Walks to encourage people to get outdoors while raising money for charity.

1,500 set for South Coast Ultra Challenge in Sussex

Brighton homes see five-figure asking price reductions
Homeowners in Brighton’s BN postcode reduced asking prices by an average of £12,926, or 3.04%, over the past year. The largest cuts were recorded in Steyning, where 67 sellers reduced prices by an average of £18,758. Sellers in Brighton’s BN1 and BN2 areas made average reductions of £14,785 and £14,657 respectively. The £16.7 million Wealden Community Sports Hub has opened near the Boship roundabout in Lower Dicker, Hailsham. Quick-thinking Coastwatch rescue trapped kayaker off Sussex
A kayaker who capsized while fishing southwest of Shoreham Harbour was rescued after a nearby yacht crew pulled him from the water and transferred him to Shoreham RNLI’s lifeboat. The National Coastwatch Institution alerted the Coastguard, while the RNLI crew medically assessed the casualty and returned him and his kayak to shore. The RNLI reiterated advice to kayakers to carry a means of calling for help, wear a buoyancy aid, check conditions, train properly and travel in groups where possible.

RNLI warns over River Arun currents in Littlehampton
The RNLI is warning beachgoers in Littlehampton about dangerous currents at the mouth of the River Arun after several rescues, including the rescue of two teenagers swept into the river from West Beach. Lifeguards carried out five rescues over two days in July and assisted ten people. The RNLI advises avoiding the first two bays near the river and the unlifeguarded west side, never swimming in the harbour, and using lifeguarded beaches between the red and yellow flags. Brighton University student tackles rape culture in design
University of Brighton graduate Rebecca Cormack has created a jewellery collection and installation art project addressing rape culture, consent, misogyny, the male gaze and victim blaming. Her installation, titled “What Were You Wearing?”, challenges a question commonly directed at survivors of sexual violence, while her jewellery explores the objectification of women and pressures surrounding female appearance. Half of the jewellery profits will be donated to Rape Crisis. West Sussex launches new plan to protect roads from weather
West Sussex County Council is introducing measures to protect local roads from increasingly extreme and variable weather. The council reports repairing more than 13,200 potholes, clearing over 34,000 drainage assets and completing half of its planned resurfacing programme, covering about 50 miles. Further measures include using granite to reduce heat absorption, a street-scene maintenance trial, preventative winter drainage work and cooperation with landowners to reduce flooding risks.

Brighton women's group hosts breast cancer fundraiser
Beats, Brews & Banter, a Brighton community for women over 40, hosted a vintage afternoon tea fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. Eight members contributed homemade cakes and conversation, raising more than £225 through donations. Founded by Christina, the group has grown to more than 100 women and organizes events focused on creativity, social connection and personal growth.

Worthing students launch Safe Havens safety app network
Students from Davison CE High School for Girls and St Andrew's CE High School have launched the Safe Havens app and network in Worthing to provide young people with immediate access to safe spaces and support when they feel at risk. More than 40 businesses and community organizations have joined, while Worthing Community Chest funding and support from the UK Safer Business Network have helped establish the scheme. The project is described as the first UK network of its kind to be entirely conceived, designed and delivered by young people, and the app is available on Google Play.

Stagecoach rolls out new digital ticket machines in Sussex
Stagecoach South and Stagecoach South East are introducing Ticketer TK300 digital ticket machines across their Sussex services. The machines can issue tickets, scan QR codes, process mobile tickets and smart cards, and accept contactless payments. Managing directors Marc Reddy and Joel Mitchell said the rollout combines respect for the company’s ticketing heritage with technology intended to make bus travel faster and more convenient.

Lucy Marks Opens Solo Exhibition at Arundel Contemporary

Uckfield Care Home Hosts Wild West-Themed Hoedown Event

Rathfinny Estate thriving despite Sussex dry weather

South Heighton Strolling Players Raise £2,000 for Charity
The South Heighton Strolling Players raised more than £2,000 through a performance of the ferry-set play “Waving or Drowning.” The proceeds will be divided equally among the National Coastwatch Institution, Sightsavers and the British Heart Foundation, with each receiving £758. Worthing sea flood defence project complete after 8 months
An almost £5 million Environment Agency-led project to improve Worthing’s coastal defences has been completed after eight months of work between Seaview Road and Brooklands Park on the Lancing border. Contractors replaced damaged groyne piles and added planks to retain beach shingle, helping protect homes and businesses from sea flooding for the next decade. Worthing Borough Council contributed £400,000, will monitor shingle levels and add more if needed, while also pursuing wider town-centre and seafront improvement plans.

Brighton restaurant The Gingerman closes down after 28 years
The Gingerman, a 30-seat restaurant in Brighton’s Norfolk Square, served its final diners on July 25 after 28 years in business. Owners Ben and Pamela McKellar said rising operating costs made it impossible for the small restaurant to continue, calling the decision heartbreaking. Hastings Silent Movie Ensemble Launches New Venture
The Hastings Silent Movie Ensemble, founded by composer and music educator Luke Hannington, will combine silent films with live music and sound effects to recreate the immersive atmosphere of 1920s cinemas. £2.3m Southern Water Upgrade Planned for Cocking Village

Newhaven hosts Quayside Arts Collective debut exhibition
The Quayside Arts Collective, comprising established and emerging mixed-media artists from Seaford, Lewes and surrounding areas, will hold its debut exhibition, Moments Gathered, at BN9 Studio in Newhaven from August 6 to 23, 2026. The free exhibition will feature paintings, experimental mixed-media works, landscapes, figurative pieces and abstract art inspired by everyday life and the South Downs. All works will be available to buy at accessible prices. The collective grew out of the Brasspoint weekly art class, and several members have previously exhibited at regional arts events and venues, with some shortlisted for the 2025 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

University of Sussex marks 30 years of Summer School success
The University of Sussex is celebrating 30 years of its Undergraduate Summer School, which has enrolled more than 10,000 students from over 50 countries and 280 partner universities since launching in 1996. A former church building on Meeching Rise in Peacehaven is being developed into the Havens Community Hub, serving people experiencing homelessness across Peacehaven, Telscombe, Saltdean and nearby areas. Bognor Regis MP Demands Answers Over Hospital Land Sale
Alison Griffiths, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, has demanded explanations after learning that land at the former Littlehampton Hospital site is being marketed for £895,000 without residents or her being directly notified. Newhaven recreation ground toilets reopen after upgrade

Drusillas Park celebrates baby boom with rare monkey births
Drusillas Park in East Sussex is celebrating a season of new births, including Colombian black spider monkeys, a rare white-faced Saki monkey, lemurs, binturongs, dwarf mongooses, pygmy marmosets and prairie dog pups. Keepers say the births are part of the zoo’s conservation work, with many animals participating in EAZA Ex Situ Programmes designed to support threatened species. University of Sussex hosts record-breaking chess tournament
The University of Sussex hosted its largest-ever chess congress from July 21 to 26, attracting more than 200 players and 100 spectators, including a five-year-old competitor, amateurs and grandmasters. Ukrainian Grandmaster Eldar Gasanov won the Masters section, while Philip Amoak and Christopher Jeffries won amateur categories. The event also included a junior chess summer school and was organized by the Sussex Student Chess Society with support from several chess organizations.

Rustington to welcome new 24-hour Snap Fitness gym

South East Water appoints John Halsall as chief executive
John Halsall has become chief executive of South East Water following regulatory approval, taking charge as the company faces criticism over water-service reliability and customer concerns. He has pledged to improve day-to-day performance, drive operational excellence and communicate more transparently with customers, stakeholders and regulators during his first nine months. Halsall brings more than 25 years of transformation and operational leadership experience from infrastructure organisations including Pennon Group, Thames Water and Network Rail. Eastbourne councillor warns asset sales will not solve debt
Eastbourne Borough Council has used proceeds from selling the David Lloyd Centre and Hampden Park Retail Estate, sold at a book loss of more than £7 million, to repay some long-term government borrowing. Conservative councillor Robert Smart warned that the council still owes about £151 million—equivalent to more than £3,400 per household—and said asset sales do not address the underlying financial problems. He also raised concerns about previously unreported short-term debt, which he said has grown from £47 million to £70 million, carries interest of nearly 6%, and has no clear repayment plan. Smart further cautioned that any merger with neighbouring authorities could obscure Eastbourne’s financial liabilities and the decisions that created them.

Nine-year-old Leo from Sussex created Snake Island, a mobile web game inspired by the restricted Brazilian island Ilha da Queimada Grande and its endangered golden lancehead vipers. Mid Sussex awards grants to five community organisations
Mid Sussex District Council has awarded community grants to five organisations: 1st East Grinstead Scout Group, Haywards Heath 10th Brownies, Inkpots Youth Mentoring, Meridian FM Radio and The Kindness Cooperation CIC. Haywards Heath Woman’s Story Inspires Award-Winning Film
The documentary Hannah’s Story chronicles Hannah Cohen’s 12-year search for treatment and meaning after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer in 2011. Hove seafront cucumber benches restored for summer
