DWP most common PIP condition with 1.5 million claims
Department for Work and Pensions figures show that psychiatric disorders are the most common primary condition recorded among Personal Independence Payment claims, accounting for more than 1.5 million claims as of April 2026. The largest categories include mixed anxiety and depressive disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, mood disorders and psychotic disorders. A diagnosis alone does not guarantee eligibility: the condition must significantly affect daily living or mobility and be expected to last at least 12 months. PIP is not means-tested, and payments depend on the severity of a claimant’s needs, with weekly rates ranging from £30.30 to £114.60 for individual components.

ISA withdrawal penalties as HMRC pulls in millions from savers
HMRC has collected around £56 million in Lifetime ISA withdrawal penalties since 2018. Savers can contribute up to £4,000 annually and receive a 25% government bonus, but unauthorised withdrawals incur a 25% charge on the full balance, meaning some of the saver’s own contributions are also lost. First-time buyers are particularly affected by the unchanged £450,000 property-price cap. The Treasury acknowledges that Lifetime ISAs do not work for everyone and is consulting on a proposed First Time Buyer ISA with a bonus paid upon withdrawal and no penalty, although a property-price cap would remain.

Full list of banned items after ‘severe’ nationwide alert - not just barbecues
An emergency alert issued across England and Wales warned residents against activities that could start fires amid prolonged heat, sunlight and drought conditions. The reported temporary restrictions include disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks, with retailers instructed to remove disposable barbecues from sale. Non-disposable barbecues remain permitted but should not be left unattended and must be fully extinguished. People are also urged to avoid open flames in countryside, parks, moorland, wooded areas and other open spaces, and to dispose of smoking materials and litter carefully.

The company is also running a photo competition offering solar panels and installation or £12,000 in cash, while warning participants to use proper eye protection.

Portugal medication rule that could leave travellers running out
Travellers taking medication to Portugal are advised to plan carefully because some medicines, including antibiotics, may be subject to stricter dispensing rules than in the UK. They should bring enough medication for the full trip plus extra, keep it in original packaging, carry prescriptions and a prescriber’s letter, check airline and import requirements, and arrange suitable storage. Travellers who run out may need to visit a health centre or hospital and pay for replacement medication. Time differences, hot weather and humidity can also affect dosing schedules, medicine efficacy and the safety of heat-sensitive equipment.

Little-known NHS letter could save you over £100 on prescriptions
People in England who are not eligible for free NHS prescriptions may be able to reduce medication costs through a Prepayment Certificate. A 12-month certificate costs £114.50 and can save more than £123 annually for someone receiving two prescriptions each month, with larger savings for those needing more items. Three-month and HRT certificates are also available, although a certificate may cost more than paying individually for people who need only one prescription per month. Applications can be made online, by phone or through some pharmacies, and refunds may be available for prescriptions bought while an application is pending.

DVLA rules explained from fine to court action as pensioner prosecuted
The DVLA can escalate unpaid vehicle-tax penalties from out-of-court settlements to magistrates’ court proceedings, with fines potentially reaching £1,000 or five times the tax owed for an untaxed vehicle, and £2,500 or five times the tax for driving a SORN vehicle on a public road. Untaxed vehicles may also be clamped, incurring release, impound and storage fees. The guidance follows the prosecution of a Newcastle pensioner over an accidentally unpaid £20 tax bill; because of his Parkinson’s disease, the magistrate ordered compensation without imposing an additional fine.

Cyclospora symptoms explained as UKHSA issues alert to travellers
Cyclospora infections are increasing among travellers returning to the UK, with 67 cases reported between April and July and 52 linked to travel to Mexico. The parasite can cause delayed-onset symptoms including explosive diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, fever, appetite loss and weight loss. Travellers are advised to maintain strict food and water hygiene abroad, avoid potentially contaminated raw produce, ice and tap water, and stay hydrated if infected. Severe or persistent infections, particularly in people with weakened immune systems, may require antibiotics.

Parents told summer holiday mistake could trigger ‘legal consequences’
There is no fixed legal minimum age or time limit for leaving a child home alone in England and Wales. Parents are expected to judge whether their child is mature, confident and capable of handling emergencies, while remaining responsible if the child is placed at risk. The NSPCC advises against leaving children under 12 alone for extended periods and recommends discussing safety and readiness with older children before doing so.

New plug-in solar panel rules come into force in August across the UK
New UK rules taking effect on August 27 will allow households to legally buy and use compliant plug-in solar panel systems, including balcony-mounted setups. The devices must meet safety specifications, have a maximum output of 800 watts and be limited to one per electrical circuit. Residents must still check planning requirements, electrical compatibility and landlord or freeholder permissions. Retailers including Currys, B&Q and Asda are expected to sell the systems, which may cost around £400 or more and could save households an estimated £70 to £110 annually, although they cannot power an entire home.

HMRC tip could give taxpayers ‘six months’ to budget for bill
HMRC says Self Assessment taxpayers can submit their 2025–26 tax return while making their July payment on account, giving them up to six months to budget for any amount due by the January deadline. Payments on account are generally due on January 31 and July 31, and missed payments or late returns can incur interest and substantial penalties. Taxpayers who cannot pay should contact HMRC early to discuss a time-to-pay agreement, potentially involving smaller instalments.

PIP mistake that could be stopping people from claiming hundreds
People applying for Personal Independence Payment may lose out because they do not provide enough detail about how their disability affects daily living and mobility. Applicants are advised to give real-life examples, describe their worst days accurately and avoid understating their needs. Government data indicates that 43% of new PIP claims under the normal rules received an award over the past five years, while 99% of Special Rules for End of Life claims did. Citizens Advice and local disability support groups can help with applications.

HMRC Issues Two-Week Alert for 864,000 Taxpayers
HMRC has warned 864,000 sole traders and landlords that they must submit their first Making Tax Digital quarterly update by August 7, 2026. The update covers income and expenses for the first three months of the tax year and is separate from the annual Self Assessment return, which remains due by January 31. The requirement initially applies to those earning more than £50,000 from self-employment and property income, expanding to thresholds of £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. HMRC will provide a penalty-free soft landing during the 2026/27 tax year, but later missed deadlines will result in penalty points and potentially a £200 fine after four points.

BBC expert shares 'don't' advice when booking holiday in 2026
Holly Hamilton urges travellers to compare prices and read terms carefully rather than booking the first appealing holiday deal. Third‑party booking sites can be useful for comparisons but may offer less security and more difficulty when issues arise. Booking directly with airlines or hotels may provide added benefits such as included luggage or flexible fares. Travellers should weigh price, convenience and security based on their own needs, with package holidays offering stronger consumer protections.

Travellers could be ‘charged’ for free service, BBC expert warns
Travellers booking flights through certain airlines are being directed to third‑party site Sherpa, which charges additional fees for processing travel authorisation forms that are often cheaper or even free through official government portals. BBC presenter Holly Hamilton warned that while some users turn to Sherpa to avoid perceived complexity, travellers can complete these applications themselves and should be cautious about unofficial websites that may take payment without submitting forms. Sherpa and British Airways defended the service as optional and transparent about fees, with airlines and the company sharing service charges.

‘Rash and flu-like symptoms’ could be key sign of infection
Northern Ireland health authorities report 21 recent mpox cases, a sharp rise compared with previous years, and urge eligible individuals to receive vaccination through sexual health clinics. The Public Health Agency highlights key symptoms including fever, aches, swollen glands and a distinctive blistering rash that can last up to three weeks. Transmission occurs through close physical contact, contaminated materials or respiratory droplets. While usually mild, the illness poses greater risk to vulnerable groups, prompting renewed emphasis on awareness and vaccination among populations with higher exposure risk.

DWP issues deadline for pensioners as Winter Fuel Payments loom
The Department for Work and Pensions has set September deadlines for pensioners to opt out of Winter Fuel Payments, which will again be issued to everyone above state pension age but recovered through taxation for those earning over £35,000. Eligibility rules, previously restricted to certain benefits, have been revised following criticism. Pensioners can use an HMRC calculator to assess whether their payment will be reclaimed and may opt out to avoid a higher tax bill. Opting out is a one‑time action unless they later choose to opt back in, and further guidance is available through Gov.uk.

Scientists discover rare ageing disorder that makes you age faster
Researchers identified Heyn-Sproul-Jackson syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that accelerates ageing by causing DNA methylation marks to accumulate rapidly, mimicking and intensifying natural ageing processes. The condition is linked to reduced blood cell production, osteoporosis, hair loss and metabolic changes associated with diabetes and high cholesterol. Mouse studies showed that increased methylation undermines adult stem cell function and tissue repair. The work, conducted by an international team led by the University of Edinburgh and published in Nature Genetics, provides new insight into the mechanisms of ageing and potential avenues for rejuvenation therapies.

Blue Badges cancelled in crackdown as users didn’t follow this rule
Authorities in the Wirral revoked more than 450 Blue Badges after discovering they were still being used following the death of the original holders, part of a joint crackdown by the Public Sector Fraud Authority and Wirral Council that saved taxpayers over £363,000. Misuse of a Blue Badge remains a criminal offence that can lead to confiscation, formal warnings or fines up to £1,000. Government guidance stresses that badges cannot be lent, copied or altered and must be displayed correctly, with holders required to return them if expired, damaged or no longer needed.

60,000 more to get benefit as DWP ‘want to do a better job’
The earnings threshold for Carer’s Allowance has been raised from £196 to £204 per week, enabling an additional 60,000 unpaid carers in the UK to qualify for the benefit. Social Security Minister Stephen Timms emphasized the importance of unpaid carers and the government’s commitment to improving support. Carer’s Allowance remains a flat £86.45 weekly payment, withdrawn entirely if earnings exceed the threshold. Additional support options for carers include Universal Credit, Pension Credit, local council assistance and council tax reductions.
