Healthcare heroes across the Military Health System (MHS) have been pivotal in the fight against COVID-19, serving on the front lines and donning masks to protect themselves and others. This month's 'MHS Minute' highlights their contributions and dedication.

The SAVE-O2 Research Team, led by Dr. Adit Ginde at the University of Colorado, has significantly advanced military medicine by studying the benefits of targeted normoxemia in critically injured and ill patients. Their findings indicate that targeted normoxemia is safe, improves clinical outcomes, and reduces the need for high-concentrated oxygen. The team collaborates with various military commands and the DHA to update training and clinical practice guidelines, and their data will inform future oxygen generator acquisitions.

CAPT Kelly Elmore, MD, OB/GYN and Chief of Staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, urges women to schedule their annual well-woman exam. Emphasizing the importance of cervical cancer screening, she notes that it is a covered TRICARE benefit. Depending on age, a pap smear and/or HPV test are recommended. Dr. Joshua Morganstein clarifies that seeking mental or behavioral health services does not generally affect security clearances. A study from 2012 to 2018 involving 2.3 million security clearances found that only 12 out of nearly 47,000 individuals who reported psychological health issues experienced a negative impact on their security clearance. Lynn "Doc" Munger, a 23-year-old Navy medic during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, recounted his experiences of caring for the injured. At 98 years old, Munger shared his story through the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project.
