Buckle family starts survey on future of Bildeston
The Buckle family, through Heathpatch Ltd and its associated businesses, has launched a survey asking Bildeston residents, businesses and community groups how future growth should be managed. The initiative responds to rising housing requirements in Babergh and concerns that piecemeal developments may not reflect local needs. The family says any new housing should form a natural extension of the village, include supporting infrastructure and services, and create local employment. A survey and community workshops will allow residents to influence proposals as they develop, while local participants have broadly welcomed the opportunity for greater community involvement.

Suffolk farmers are buying up neighbouring farmland
Established farmers are buying neighbouring and strategically important farmland as more property comes onto the market in the East of England. Savills reported a 13% year-on-year increase in publicly marketed farmland in the region during the first half of 2026, while listings across Great Britain fell 12%. Prime arable land in the East averaged £9,270 per acre, with Grade 3 land at £8,785, although prices varied widely by property quality and location. Demand is also being supported by non-farming buyers seeking capital-gains-tax rollover relief. Despite low rainfall, higher costs linked to conflict in the Middle East and the withdrawal of farm support, established businesses are pursuing economies of scale and alternative income streams, while best-in-class farms continue to attract strong competition.

Framlingham herd on winter feed as drought kills grass
Dennington Hall Farms near Framlingham has begun feeding its 76 Red Poll cattle winter haylage because drought and successive heatwaves have eliminated grass from its grazing meadows. Farm manager Ryan McCormack says feed supplies should last for a few months, although further drought could require buying hay. Crop results were mixed: oilseed rape yielded 4.32 tonnes per hectare, while winter wheat averaged 8.6 tonnes per hectare—about 10% below normal—with LG Beowulf and LG Lotus performing particularly well. Dry, hard soil is now delaying cover crops, cultivation and preparations for next year's planting.

Suffolk dairy farmers urge bluetongue virus vaccines
Suffolk dairy farmers Katharine and Jason Salisbury are urging livestock owners to vaccinate against bluetongue virus serotype 3 after their herd experienced an outbreak in 2007. The virus, spread by biting midges, can cause severe illness, fertility problems, birth defects and deaths in cattle and sheep, while hotter weather is creating more favourable conditions for its spread. Although vaccines are available, fewer than 10% of vulnerable animals are reportedly protected. The National Farmers' Union says vaccination is the most effective defence, alongside measures such as housing animals when midges are most active.

Suffolk farmers praised for efforts at Dunwich Heath fire
Suffolk farmers and contractors supported firefighters during the major Dunwich Heath wildfire by supplying water bowsers, tanks and heavy machinery, creating a 7km network of firebreaks, clearing vegetation and tackling hotspots. Their efforts helped protect Westleton, nearby homes, cottages and a caravan park, while firefighters brought the blaze under control after roughly two weeks with no deaths and only one minor injury. Participants highlighted the difficult terrain, extreme heat, smoke, poor communications and concerns about vegetation and firebreaks. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and the National Trust praised the coordinated community response, while the National Trust said the exceptional weather and fire behaviour meant that even extensive mitigation measures could not have prevented the spread entirely.

Stonham Barns Park owners to add new lodges and upgrade site
Cosgrove Leisure Parks UK has acquired Stonham Barns Park in Suffolk from administration in a multimillion-pound deal and plans to invest in the 180-acre holiday and rural retail park. Managing director Patrick Cosgrove says the site could eventually expand from around 200 lodges to 600 or 700, alongside more retail units and upgraded facilities. Potential developments include an outdoor aqua park, padel court and shooting range, subject to planning applications. The company is also seeking further acquisitions in Suffolk and Norfolk, although Cosgrove says the cost-of-living crisis, weak housing market and struggling retail sector are creating challenging conditions.

Norwich to Tilbury project affected homes could get £250 off
Households living within 500 metres of new pylons or electricity substations could receive up to £250 a year off their electricity bills under a government scheme. Communities in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex near projects including the 159-kilometre Norwich to Tilbury transmission route may qualify, subject to planning approval. Energy minister Michael Shanks says overhead pylons are the most cost-effective way to expand the grid, while Babergh and Mid Suffolk councils argue that the proposal has not adequately considered an undersea or fully underground alternative and could damage farming, biodiversity, tourism and heritage.

Thorndon shop near Eye marks 15 years as community venture
Thorndon Community Shop is celebrating 15 years since villagers saved the local store after its original owners, Darren and Jenny Hayward, found it commercially unviable. Residents, volunteers and community representatives created a not-for-profit enterprise in 2011, with the Haywards agreeing to favorable rent terms and selling the fixtures and fittings. The shop now relies on 22 volunteers, remains open on weekday and Saturday mornings, and stayed open throughout the Covid pandemic. Community leaders describe it as a lifeline because residents otherwise face journeys of three to four miles to shop in Eye or at Brockford.

Suffolk farmer’s warning as farm death toll revealed
A Suffolk farmer highlights the human cost of dangerous working conditions in agriculture after displaying high‑visibility jackets representing workers killed since April 2025. New figures show farming remains the UK’s most hazardous industry, with 22 deaths in 2025–26 and thousands more suffering serious injuries or ill health. The Farm Safety Foundation urges greater focus on non‑fatal but life‑changing injuries as Farm Safety Week begins, while calls are made for a cultural shift within the farming community to prioritise rest, proper equipment and safe working practices.

Suffolk farm reservoirs run dry as summer drought continues
Reservoirs across Suffolk farms are nearly empty as a prolonged summer drought limits irrigation and reduces yields of cereals, vegetables and root crops. Farmers report below-average harvests, heightened fire risks and higher costs, particularly due to fuel prices. While some irrigated fields performed better than expected, spring barley and several vegetable crops are under strain. Estates are shifting limited water supplies among crops as they try to maintain quality and minimize losses.

Suffolk Labour MP warns Andy Burnham over farming future
A new report from the Labour Rural Research Group and the Country Land and Business Association urges Labour to prioritize rural communities by integrating farming, food security and environmental markets into a national economic growth strategy. Suffolk MP Jenny Riddell-Carpenter argues that rural areas should be treated as strategic assets and says Andy Burnham has an opportunity to reset Labour’s relationship with rural Britain. The report highlights a persistent productivity gap between rural and urban areas and calls for targeted infrastructure investment, improved rural policy design, support for business growth and a clearer land‑use framework. Polling shows strong public backing for greater focus on rural issues, and stakeholders say adopting the report’s recommendations could unlock significant economic potential.
